HOUSE WILLOUGBHY
From the start, we knew the design had to be discreet. Any addition or alterations had to have a minimal impact on the street presence of this wonderfully preserved 1950’s Californian Bungalow duplex. The clients needed to upscale and improve the function of their home to suit their modern lifestyle while preserving the existing heritage character.
The block was small, shared a wall with its neighbour and formed part of the Willoughby Heritage Conservation Area. The ambitious scale of new works has been creatively concealed behind the bulk of the existing dwelling, allowing only momentary sighting from the street. The design clearly delineates communal and private areas of the home giving the clients both a profound sense of individual privacy and family gathering. Finer use of materials and details allows this alterations to artfully sit within its historical context.
